Wenger Refuses To Rule Out Signing A Free Agent As Diarra, Yobo And Lugano Are Linked

Arsenal might not be finished in the market just yet. Arsene Wenger has refused to rule out a move for a free agent, as defensive injuries mount in Arsenal’s unbalanced squad.

With just 6 senior defenders in the squad, Debuchy injury blow presented a big problem for the Gunners. Bellerin was thrown in at the deep end with a start in Germany as Arsenal were embarrassed by Dortmund. With a poor defensive record all season, there are suggestions that Wenger would dip into the market for a free agent.

The Frenchman has refused to rule it out. On signing a free agent he responded in Arsenal’s pre-match press conference today:

“You cannot rule anything out because it depends on how long the injuries are and how many you have. “At the moment, we are not in that need.”

Arsenal had been heavily linked with a move for Lassana Diarra over the last week. Defensive duo Joseph Yobo and Diego Lugano, both of whom have Premier League experience have been linked. Both players seem past their best though, and Wenger’s words suggest only desperation or a couple more injuries could force his hand.

It’s probably good – Arsene is aware that there are options out there, but will only reinforce if we really need too. That is sensible. What isn’t sensible is not strengthening this area in the summer.
