Player Ratings: Besiktas 0-0 Arsenal

Wojciech Szczesny-7

Was confident with everything he did but wasn’t forced into too many big saves. Had to be alert from the kick off when he was almost lobbed by Demba Ba.

Mathieu Debuchy-8

Making his Champions League bow, Debuchy was so impressive. He has the experience for his country but his threat down the right almost helped Arsenal get a goal. Was good defensively too. Good signing by the looks of things.

Calum Chambers-8

Another one from Chambers. Another storming performance. Made one error but otherwise looked like he was captaining the side for his 200th game at Arsenal. Amazingly composed for an out of position 19 year old. Huge potential.

Laurent Koscielny-7

Koscielny was very good again and did his job well. Think he helped Chambers settle in to this defence and he is a world class defender now, he has proven that consistently enough at the highest level.

Nacho Monreal-7

He looked good today. In pre season he didn’t fill me with much confidence but I can have no complaints with what he did today. Looks fitter and hopefully ready to perform like that whilst Gibbs is out injured.

Mikel Arteta-6 (off 50)

Arteta didn’t do much wrong but did not standout. Picked up an injury 50 minutes in and it might be a sore one. Arsenal may well have to dip into the transfer market for a defensive midfielder now, wouldn’t be the worst thing.

Jack Wilshere-6

Wilshere was one of the more positive performers in the final third. He looked strong and fit. Didn’t manage to score or create a goal but came close on a few occasions. Looks better than last season.

Aaron Ramsey-4 (Sent off 80)

Bloody stupid from Ramsey. Pulled down opponents twice and got two yellow cards. No idea why he did it and now we won’t have him for the second leg. Stupid stupid Aaron.

Santi Cazorla-5 (off 90)

Better than Saturday but not by much. Would be great if he could come back onto good form consistently.

Alexis Sanchez-7 (off 73)

The Chilean was good for Arsenal when on the pitch. His pace hurt Besiktas but his passing was still a bit out. Looked our most dangerous player though, not too sure why Arsene took him off.

Olivier Giroud-2

Was really really poor tonight. Should have scored at least once and his passes were rarely completed. Must improve or Arsenal need a striker, badly. You can see now why Arsene Wenger was so keen to play Yaya Sanogo against Crystal Palace and Manchester City, Giroud is not fit yet.

Subs

Mathieu Flamini-5 (On 51)

Got a yellow card 4 minutes after coming on. Standard Flamini.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain-7 (On 73)

Almost scored the winner and changed the game, shame he didn’t get on earlier.

Thomas Rosicky- N/A (On 90)
