Why Arsenal should bid big for Marco Reus

Possibly the most exciting German talent in the world has caught the eye of every big club in the world. Borussia Dortmund and Jurgen Klopp are the envy of the footballing world as they possess a future Ballon d’Or contender. Arsene Wenger scouted the 25 year old winger several years ago whilst he was at Borussia Mönchengladbach. Arsenal were linked with a move but presumably pulled due to the €18 million asking price. Reus’ boyhood club swooped in during the January transfer window in 2012, as Wenger is notorious for not spending in winter. What a world class player he has become in the past two seasons. Reus was instrumental in Dortmund’s 2012/13 Champions League campaign, leading them to the final. Unfortunate to not have won any trophy yet, coming runner up in the German Supercup, Pokal, Bundesliga and of course the Champions League.

According to Bloomberg, Marco Reus is the 4th best footballer in Europe, which says a lot about a player who hasn’t been a part of a trophy winning side. With Arsenal’s recent purchase of their second most expensive signing Alexis Sanchez, it would be unordinary for Arsene Wenger to sign a similar player. It has been reported that Reus has a €30 million buyout clause in his contract which comes into effect in 2015. This means that even though he is worth above €40 million, he could be bought at a cheaper price in 5 months time. Wenger could take advantage of this dilemma by offering Dortmund a value much higher than his buyout clause so that they would have to rethink their stance of not selling. They wouldn’t want to miss out on money they won’t get if he was to leave in 2015.

Marco Reus’ boyhood hero was Arsenal’s very own Czech maestro Tomáš Rosický, who won the Bundesliga with Dortmund in the 2001/02 season. Reus could potentially be the ideal replacement for the 34 year old, as they seem to play a very similar style. Both players carry the ball forward at every turn, are excellent dribblers and have superb vision. If Rosicky had an injury free Arsenal career, he would’ve been one of the world’s greatest players. Adored by every Arsenal fan, Dortmund and Reus, Rosicky could help Wenger convince the German to join a club building for an exceptional future. Wenger himself is a major attraction but to be able to train with your idol could be the tipping point.

Reus has a magnificent scoring record with Dortmund, having scored 42 goals in his 90 appearances in all competitions. This past season alone he scored 21 goals and provided 15 assists. He would fit in perfectly with Arsenal’s fast paced passing style. Just imagine an Arsenal attack force with Sanchez as the striker, Walcott on the right wing, Reus on the left wing and Özil as the central attacker. No doubt it would compete with the attacking line ups of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. If Arsenal are persistent enough they could secure Reus and they themselves could become the envy of the football world.
